| Questions: Are Office Depot and Staples the least expensive place for business o Can smaller firms compete in this industry? I'm in Los Angeles. What office supplies companies deliver and offer the very best rates? |
| Smaller firms in the office supplies business can definitely be competitive. But for it to be successful, the entrepreneur should know his marketing plan. That is very important if you want to reach your target customers and make a profit. Also you may want to target your local market first. If you can think of some service that you can offer that other businesses don't, then you will have a fair advantage. |
| "Loss Leader Items"
You might find that many large retail businesses operate on the principal of loss leaders. For example offer some items on sale giving the cost a price close to, or even below cost to get them in the store.Once there they load up their cart with lots of stuff they weren't really intended to buy before they got there and without any price comparisons. For example, I just looked up a Safco 4062 fold up hand truck on two websites: Staples comes in at $134.99 Office1000.com comes in at $106.97 Both offering free shipping. |
| "Discount Office Supplies"
Thanks very much for letting me answer this question. Actually, Office Depot, and Staples are generally VERY expensive. The reason being, is that they have a tremendous amount of overhead. Supply Brothers, is an online office retailer, without the overhead of larger companies. Therefore, we are cheaper. For example, Supply Brothers sells product # CNM2973B001 (Cannon 2973B001 (PG-210XL) High-Yield Ink, 401 Page-Yield, Black)for $19.28 and Staples price is $23.49. This pricing difference is pretty much the same case with all our office supplies compared to theirs. |
| I agree that Office Depot and Staples often sell office and school supplies at the lowest price but it doesn't hurt to compare them with smaller office supplies shops to know how much you're saving. Location is also a consideration. These Office Depot and Staples may have the cheapest goods but if they are located at the other end of the state, then your travel cost would cost more than the items that you bought. |
| "My reply #2"
Didn't anyone read my #2 reply? The big retail stores often sell certain products at a very good price. Other products are sold at a price that is not so good. They key to saving money is to shop very carefully. Never go to a store without a shopping list. Include on the shopping list the prices you'll pay for the items from smaller stores. Never buy something that is NOT on your list or that has the SAME or HIGHER price. Why not buy if it has the same price? Because buying local or buying from a small business will be more supportive of the economy. |
